My name is Alexis Smith, I am a senior at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy, and I am 17 years old. I started cheerleading when I was three turning four years old, and I have continued to cheer throughout my high school career. Cheerleading was always a sense of safety for me. Growing up I had a lot of self esteem issues and I never felt confident in my own skin, however when I stepped onto the mat on a competition day I finally felt like that was where I belonged to be. Cheerleading also helped me in many other ways, it was always an escape that I could use from anything that could be going on at home or at school. I even went to practice when my grandfather died and right after his funeral I left to go to cheer practice. I had coaches that were so influential to me finding who I was meant to be, and there are even a couple of coaches that I still keep in contact with. I want to share what cheerleading has given me, and what my coaches gave to me and pass it on to the middle school girls on our pep squad, but I also plan on doing that in my classroom when I become a teacher.
Mission Statement
I plan on attending Long Island University Post in the fall of 2017. I want to do a double major, for secondary education with a focus on social sciences, and special education. I plan on pursuing a career as a high school teacher. As a teacher, I want to aid in my students' success, and also give them a comfortable place to be where they know they are always accepted.
